After the loss of the SSN Thresher in 1963, the Navy began major redesign of the class. These redesigned boats became known as the Permit (SSN-594) class. They became the basis for all future American attack subs, with their deep-diving HY-80 construction also applied to the Lafayette class ballistic missile submarines.
Following the Permit class, was the improved and slightly larger Surgeon class. With the same weapons and sonars, these boats also used the same S5W powerplant.
The first Sturgeon class sub was launched in 1966, with thirty-seven additional boats built, ending with SSN 687 in 1974.
The Yankee Modelworks kit measures 12.5 inches long and is a perfect first kit. The hull is a single casting with metal dive planes. A great weekend project.
For advanced modelers only!
Yankee modelworks kits are resin and metal kits designed for modelers experienced in these materials. These are not plastic kits and require a different skillset to construct.
