D-Day, June 6, 1944 - the day on which the Battle of Normandy began - commencing the Western Allied effort to liberate mainland Europe from Nazi occupation during World War II.
Teamed with the U.S. 1st Infantry Division, the 116th Infantry Regiment of the 29th Division was in the first assault wave to hit the beaches at Normandy on D-Day. The division itself landed on Omaha Beach on the same day in the face of intense enemy fire.
