After the end of World War I Germany was not allowed to produce any armoured machinery besides a minimum number of armoured cars for the army and police. The Panzerkampfwagen I Ausf.A (Sd.Kfz.101) was the first German tank to go into mass production since World War I and featured two 7.92mm MG13 machine-guns mounted coaxially in the turret. The first complete Pz.Kpfw.IA tanks were issued in September, 1934. By the beginning of World War II the Pz.Kpfw.IA was distributed through all Panzer units. It was used extensively in Poland and France and took part in the invasion of Denmark and Norway. The Pz.Kpfw.IA was withdrawn from main combat units beginning in late 1940.
