The French Foreign Legion has earned the most respect of all the worlds' elite fighting forces. The French Foreign Legion was created by Royal ordinance by King Louis-Phillippe in 1831. Its original intention was to secure the King's seat on the throne, given the occurrence of coup d'etats and other revolutions.
The Legion helped liberate Northern Africa during WWII. In the 1960's, the Legion sent 20,000 men to the Algerian War. During the Gulf War, the Legion played a critical role in the Iraqi invasion and in capturing Al Salman airport. Today, the French Foreign Legion is a military formation of approximately 8500 men, comprised of foreigners as well as Frenchmen.
