WWII US Navy carrier based aircraft active in the Pacific theater. The key variation of the Wildcat, became operational with the U.S. Navy in 1940-41. Its folding-wing design allowed for significantly more Wildcats to be parked aboard fleet carriers. Early in the war these carrier-based aircraft became the backbone of the US Navy. They were instrumental in the battle of Midway and the Coral Sea though they were not as fast or as maneuverable as the longer-range Zeros.
