The first-of-class USS Zumwalt (DDG-1000) was launched in October 2013, and eventually commissioned on 15 October 2016, while the second one USS Michael Monsoor (DDG-1001) was commissioned on 26 January 2019. The third and final one in this classs, USS Lyndon B. Johnson (DDG-1002), will also be commissioned in 2020. The type features a wave-piercing hull and sleek form to reduce its radar cross-section.
This kit permits modelers to build either USS Lyndon B. Johnson/USS Michael Monsoor, or Zumwalt DDG-1000. They are accurately produced in 1/700 scale and the kit features new toolings as befitting such a radical new design. As usual, both a waterline and a full hull are available. Dragon's kit reflects the latest configuration of these destroyers. Slide molds are widely utilized, and parts separation is very smartly engineered so that the plastic kit masterfully replicates the unusual shape of this stealth destroyer. This item features completely new parts such as the top of the main superstructure, upgraded radars and two Mk 46 Mod 2 30mm cannons. In fact, these intricate elements are made by 3D printing, demonstrating just how state of the art this plastic kit actually is.
