The F-84 was Republic's response to a 1944 USAAF specification for a new day fighter aircraft. The first Thunderjet flew in February 1946, and entered operational service the next year. The F-84 saw extensive service during the Korean War and went on to become the USAF's main strike aircraft in that conflict, with all variants flying 86,406 sorties, most of which were against ground targets.
