97 Pieces. The Panther tank was designed in 1941 as the main equipment for Germany's armoured divisions, replacing the earlier and lighter tanks with which the Panzer units had commenced the war. Weighing 45 tons and armed with one 75 mm gun and two light machine guns, the Panther proved the equal of the Russian T34 medium tank whilst completely outclassing the American Sherman. By the end of the war, nearly 5,000 Panthers had been produced and it remained the supreme medium tank, although lacking in sufficient numbers to counteract the Allied armour. Dimensions consisted of an overall length, excluding gun, of 22 ft 8 in, a width of 11 ft 3 in and a height of 9 ft 7 in. Armour plate varied in thickness from 20 to 110 mm.
