To meet the many different demands made on the German army's pioneer force in the Second World War, it was necessary to form increasingly specialized tasks units, such as the landing pioneers, the tank and parachute unis. A special mention should also be made of the storm units which operated with the infantry to lead direct attacks on enemy strongholds.
