The exact launch date of the Flagship of the French fleet, SOLEIL ROYAL (Le Soleil Royale) with its 104 cannons, is a matter of controversy. Many historians say 1690 whilst others are of the opinion that she was engaged in combat in the Mediterranean Sea as early as the 1670's. History goes that she was built in Brest between 1669 and 1671 by engineer Laurent Hubac, and commissioned as the flagship of the escadre du Ponant (squadron of the Ponant). She was built after King Louis XIV, Soleil Royal (Le Soleil Royale) was the symbol of grace and ability. As the flagship of the French Navy, Soleil Royal (Le Soleil Royale) was sumptuously decorated with wooden carvings symbolic of the French monarch. She led the French fleet at the Battle of Beachy Head ("Bataille de Beveziers"), in 1690. The squadron met a 97-ship strong English and Dutch fleet. In spite of their numerical inferiority, the French attacked, forcing enemy ships to flee with significant losses (Battle of La Hougue). In 1692, Soleil Royal (Le Soleil Royale) was hauled up onto the beach at Cherbourg for repairs. At port, it was a defenseless target for the Dutch and British attack on June 2nd and 3rd. The loss Soleil Royal--the most impressive tall ship that France ever built, together with 18 others, was the most serious naval setback for France in the 17th century. Today, Soleil Royal (Le Soleil Royale) remains France's cry of courage.
