In 1939 the German Supreme Command officially passed the code-named "Z" large-scale shipbuilding program. The core of the Z program was for 2 classes of ships, the Bismarck class and "H-class" battleships.
The planned H-Class battleship design began in 1937 with a total of six expected to be built. The first ship H39 started in 1939, laying the keel on July 15. However, on October 10 construction was suspended to concentrate on submarines.
