The Le Suroit is a French Marine Research Vessel operated by the Ifremer Marine Research Institute. The ship rose to fame in 1985 when it was involved in a two-ship expedition to search for the wreck of the Titanic. The wreck was found on 1 September 1985 thanks in part to the then novel Sonar (Sonar Acoustique Remorque, in short: SAR). It is located at position 41* 43 '55 N, 49* 56' 45 W at a depth of 3803 metres (12475 ft). The tow-able side-scan sonar was at this time able to produce images of the seabed in unprecedented quality.
