Capable of reaching speeds exceeding Mach 3, the SR-71 "Blackbird" was a favorite of recon units from day one. The famed 9th Strategic Reconnaissance Wing flew the SR-71A throughout the Vietnam War. While stationed at Beale Air Force Base in Palmdale, California and Kadena Air Base in Okinawa, Japan, the 9th SRW averaged one sortie daily by 1972.
