The F/A-18C is one of the most successful Light Combat Aircraft to date. With its outstanding electronics and radar systems it can be used equally well as a fighter bomber or an air superiority fighter. It can achieve a top speed in access of Mach 1.8 and without drop tanks has a range of 770 km. The maximum payload for missiles and bombs is 7 tons. The Swiss Air Force chose the F/A-18C Hornet because of its excellent flight performance and handling characteristics. It has a fast response time and excellent dogfighting capabilities. License production of the F/A-18C took place at SF in the town of Emmen between 1996 to 1999. In 1997, No 17 Squadron received the F/A-18C and is one of three Hornet Squadrons stationed at the airfield in Payerne. No 18 Squadron received the F/A18 Interceptor during the Spring of 1998 and is also stationed in Payerne. In January 2010 both squadrons were able to take delivery of an F/A-18C with a completely new livery depicting the squadron emblem and use at many Air Shows.
