In June 1944,shortly after the D-Day landings in Normandy,US Army Major Charles Carpenter found himself the personal pilot of General John Woods of the 4th the Armoured Division. His aircraft was the Piper L4,a small light observation aircraft, also used as in this case for officer transport.Wanting to hit back at the Germans,Charles came up with the idea of mounting two Bazooka anti tank rocket launchers to the wing struts of his L4.With the help of willing ground crew mechanics, this was successfully accomplished. He named his aircraft"Rosie The Rocketer",perhaps inspired by "Rosie The Riveter",made famous in wartime propaganda movies.Charles now began to hunt enemy tanks in his spare time. This drew the attention of the Army Times newspaper which reported his exploits on several occasions.By the end of the war Rosie carried no fewer than six Bazookas and has accounted for 5 German tank and several lighter vehicles.
