The GAZ-AAA truck was the triaxial modification of the GAZ-AA. The American Ford-Timken truck was the prototype for GAZ-AA. During its production (1934-1943) a total of 37,373 trucks were produced, 9,724 during WWII.

GAZ-AAA trucks were used for transportation of goods, staff and for towage of artillery systems. During the pre-war period GAZ-AAA trucks were produced as self-powered bases for Maxim machine guns, heavy machine gun DShK and 25mm and 37mm automatic air defense guns.

Different special trucks were produced based on the GAZ-AAA chassis such as communications trucks (RSB-F), movable repair shops PARM and PM type A, fuel tanks BZ-38 and BZ-38U, water-oil bowser BMZ-38, ground starters AS-2 etc. The BA-6 and BA-10 armoured cars were also produced on GAZ-AAA chassis.

Shortages of metal and components during the war period produced simplistic variant of these trucks. Wartime trucks had welded wings, simplified cabs, deleted bumper and right headlights, and brakes were installed only on the rear wheels. Because of the cold winter canvas top and wooden doors were added to the cab in 1943.
