Although the T17E1 Stanghound was never operated by US forces during WW2,it was nevertheless an American designed vehicle.Had it been accepted into US service,it would have been designated the M6 Armored Car,in fact the Australian army appear to have used this designation for their Staghounds.

The Stanghound arrived in Europe too late for service in Tunisia, and first saw operational service in ltaly during 1943.it was quickly found to be too large to be popular with the British front-line troops, who generally appear to have preferred the Daimler armoured car,but its roominess made it an ideal command vehicle in Squadron Headquarters troops.Canadian troops however seem to have used it as the main equipment within the sabre troops of recce regiments. It was used throughout the campaign in NW Europe.

Nearly 4000 Stanghounds were produced, all being supplied to Britain, many of which were then forwarded to her alliese.g.Australia, Belgium, Canada, Cuba, Denmark, Honduras, India, Israel, Lebanon, Netherlands, New Zealand, Nicaragua, Rhodesia, Saudi Arabia and South Africa.

There were three main versions of the Stanghound used by Britain and those allies equipped on the British model;these were:Stanghound I (equipped the US 37mm gun),Stanghound III (Crusader III turret with a 75mm gun)& Stanghound AA.
