The S.199 was manufactured by formally German-controlled Czechoslovakian factory, Avia, based on the planes of Messerschmitt Bf-109G-14. The cowling was modified to accomodate the 1,350 HP Junkers Jumo 211F, which was the only available engine. The single-seat S.199 was difficult to handle, particularly on takeoffs and landings Hence the pilots nicknamed this Mezek, or"Mule". The Avia left its mark in Israel during the War of independence in 1948. The skies over Israel had been dominated by the Egyptian Air Force's Spitfires and Dakotas from May 15, 1948. On may 29, the Arab forces in route to Tel Aviv receives a surprise attack when they were confronted by first four of Israeli Air Force's S.199. Although one plane was lost, this attack stopped the advancement of the ground forces of the Egyptians and enabled the IDF ground forces to plan defensive moves. Modi Alon, commander of the first Combat Squadron, scored the first kill in the history of IAF on June 3, 1948. Two Egyptian Dakotas had completed their bombing mission over Tel Aviv and were on their return journey when they were both shot by Modi Alon on his S.199. Total of 511 S.199 were manufactured by Avia, of which IAF received 24. Of course, only five remained in flying condition at the end of the War Independence.
