Sistership to the USS Alaska, the Guam was one of two Battlecruisers
completed for the US Navy during WWII. The ultimate of cruiser
development, the Alaska class was the culmination of cruiser
development, unrestricted by treaties. Armed with 9 12" Main guns, the
Alaska's were designed to outgun anything they couldn't outrun. When
completed in 1945, the requirements that dictated the design were
outdated, and the class did not offer the best return for the investment
put into them. Quickly retired after WWII, the class served less than 3
years. Often considered for conversion to the first missile capable
surface ships for the US Navy, the Alaska's survived for 20 years in the
reserve fleet before being sold for scrap. The YankeeModelworks kit of
the Guam can be modeled as either a full hull, or a waterline kit.
Complete with resin main parts, white metal detail parts, and a complete
photoetch set.
