After the cold war ended, the US Army developed more in the direction of light infantry units, as units that could be moved quickly by air transport without heavy equipment were better suited to the containment of future hot-spots world-wide than the armoured divisions that previously faced the forces of the former Warsaw pact countries in Europe.
