January 1985: for the first time a German team wins the murderous Paris-Dakar Rally in the lorry class. K.F. Capito and his son Jost were able to put the whole of the competition in its place in their over 180 hp (132 kW) Mercedes Unimog. In 1985 the hardest rally in the world went from Paris via Algeria, Niger, Mali, Mauritania, and Guinea to Dakar in Senegal. Scorching heat by day and freezing cold by night, combined with the widest variety of sections (desert tracks, crushed stone and mud routes as well as primeval forest and mountains) posed the greatest challenges to drivers and equipment. The all-wheel drive Mercedes-Benz Unimog proved to be the ideal vehicle for this terrain. It is equipped with a 5,675 cc supercharged engine and has an 8 speed gear box with differential lock. Special front/rear stabilisers, a 650 litre diesel tank and a 100 litre water tank make the Rally Unimog one of the highest performing vehicles.
