Together with the Me 109 the Spitfire is the best-known aircraft of World War II. It was built in numerous variants until long after the end of the war with a total build of over 22,500. The Merlin 12-cylinder engine developed for the Spitfire started with 1,175 hp later it was over 1,720 hp and it was so outstanding that it was built under licence in the USA. At the beginning of the Second World War the RAF already had the Spitfire Mk. 1 in its fighter squadrons. A total of 1,566 of the Spitfire Mk. 1 were built and 19 squadrons were equipped with them by the beginning of the Battle of Britain.
